Found around the slip-way of Grimsby fish docks in the early 1980's on my many forays around the industrial sites of my home-town in N E Lincs. Men working on boats and seine nette's would use any available space around them to clean their brushes at the end of a working day. You can almost see the sub-conscious influence of abstract expressionism and found imagery akin to Aaron Siskind and Harry Callaghan, and now coined street photography, this image became a precursor to 'industrial graffiti' and was used by Peter Saville for a New Order songbook in 1990.
A crop of this image was also used for the cover of 'Perfect Kiss', FAC123, until Saville decided it didn't fit in with the monochrome of the album Low-life, and shelved using it!
